Manchester United are interested in signing Espanyol left-back Aaron Martin, according to reports on ESPN.

The left side of defence has become something of a problem position for Jose Mourinho, who has used Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and Ashley Young there already this season, all with limited success it must be said.

Sadly, it also seems that the Old Trafford career of Luke Shaw, the man many United fans believed would become the club’s long-term left-back is all but over.

Martin has been in superb form for Espanyol in La Liga this season, with his crossing and dribbling ability particularly catching the eye. The 20-year-old also displays the usual high levels of technique and tactical awareness that we have come to expect from young Spanish players.

Martin has been capped by Spain from U16 level up until U21 and made his breakthrough to Espanyol’s first-team at the beginning of last season – going on to make 30 appearances in all competitions during the 2016/2017 campaign.

Although the Spanish side’s hierarchy are resigned to losing the talented youngster they are said to be determined to extract the full €40 million buyout clause stipulated in the 20-year-olds contract.

United scouts have watched Martin on several occasions already this season and the club has requested that Espanyol keep them updated on any future developments regarding the player.
