Newcastle have made 3 signings so far this summer. Atsu, Lejeune and Murphy have all arrived at St. James’ leaving the Newcastle faithful with a feeling of slight disappointment. There was a real sense that Newcastle were going to spend big this summer and despite bringing in some good players, it still feels like they could’ve done more. By not completing enough deals early the fear is that the club may be subject to panic buying late on in the window.
Earlier on this month when interviewed, Rafa told Sky Sports that “Everything is in place to move forward. Hopefully Mike can keep his word and we can do what we want to do.” Benitez also said “He [Mike Ashley] said that he would give us every last penny so hopefully he will do it and I’m confident that he will.”
Benitez has been rumoured to quit many times before due to tension between him and the owner, but this interview was very tactical and was clearly meant to pressurise Ashley into giving him the necessary resources required to stay in the Premier League next season.
Upon seeing that interview, it came across as if it was almost a coded message to the fans telling them that Ashley is reluctant to spend. It is clear that Rafa is telling us who is to blame if this transfer window isn’t satisfactory and that will hopefully prompt Mike Ashley to put his hand in his pocket and let Benitez do his thing. Only time will tell whether Benitez can work his magic and recruit some more quality players for Newcastle to be competitive next season.
