Manchester United fans will have noticed that the already impressive battle between Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial for a place on the left-side of Jose Mourinho’s attack, has moved up a notch in intensity in the last week.
Both players have been in electric form so far this term despite having limited minutes on the pitch in order to accommodate each others role in the team.
The quite ridiculous statistics that United’s talented youngsters have posted in term of goals and assists clearly show just how well each player is performing.
Rashford has found the net five times and has five assists in 504 minutes of football – or five full games.
Martial has scored five goals and has four assists in 281 minutes of football – or three full games.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the duo’s form for United boss Jose Mourinho will be their attitude. Neither has sulked or felt hard done by when left out of the team – its seems that both are intent in simply upping their game every time they get a chance and driving each others performance on to higher and higher heights.
Both of United’s young guns are very much modern forwards who can play in all positions across the front, providing pace, power, dribbling ability and excellent finishing.
Rashford probably has slightly superior speed compared to Martial, although the France international is generally a lot more composed in one-on-one situations.
But, what if it didn’t have to be a case of one starting and one on the bench for these supremely gifted youngsters, why not start them both?
What about playing both of them together, with Rashford replacing Juan Mata on the right. The 19-year-old Mancunian played there on occasion last season; demonstrating several times that he has excellent delivery and the pace to burn almost any full-back on the outside.
Although fan favourite Mata is a classy player, it’s hard to shake the feeling that he just isn’t built athletically for running up and down the wing for 90 minutes. It may even be an idea to let the little Spanish magician compete against Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the number 10 role.
United’s Armenian attacker started the season brilliantly, but has gone off the boil a little over the last few weeks – Mata’s ability to play in tight spaces and tread perfectly weighted through balls may well be better suited to a central role.
A front-three of Rashford, Martial and Romelu Lukaku would surely form the most dangerous attacking trident in the Premier League and would strike fear into opposition defences like no other.
Playing all three of United’s current topscorer’s together just screams goals and would be the most exciting frontline seen at Old Trafford since the days of Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez. Go on Jose give it a try!
