Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has earmarked Napoli’s Jorginho as his main summer transfer target according to a report in the Daily Star.
The Brazilian born Italy international has been in sparkling form for Napoli as they have raced in to an early lead in the hunt for the Serie A title. While Dries Mertens’ goals have obviously been important in helping the Naples side to 10 wins in 11 games, Jorginho’s presence at the base of midfield has been the rock on which their impressive run has been built.
Boasting the most completed passes of any player in Europe in 2017, he is able to control the game and dictate the pace of his side’s attacks while also protecting the defenders behind him.
If Wenger is successful in signing the midfielder it will address a long standing issue at the heart of the Gunners’ team. Granit Xhaka, who was brought in in May 2016 to add some steal to Arsenal’s midfield has been wildly inconsistent while Santi Cazorla’s injury problems mean he can no longer be relied on to contribute to the North London side’s cause.
Jorginho will be 26 by the time any move will be made and depending on how the rest of his year goes, he could come to England as a Serie A winner. Add that to the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles he already has and then consider whatever he may do at the World Cup and Arsenal will almost certainly be facing having to pay a substantial transfer fee for the player. But make no mistake, he has everything Arsenal are missing at the moment and has all the skills to become a star in the Premier League
