Tom Cleverly bagged a dramatic winner to give Watford a well deserved victory over Arsenal but who were the star performers and who stunk the place out?

Watford

Gomes 8

Couldn’t do much about Mertesacker’s bullet header but kept his side in the game with smart stops to deny Xhaka, Iwobi and Ozil. A match winning effort.

Mariappa 7

Unlucky to be substituted the centre back was immense for the hour he was on the field.

Kabasele 7

Perhaps he should have been more alert to Mertesacker’s threat for the opener but otherwise did well to deny Welbeck and Lackazette any decent scoring opportunities.

Britos 7

Like his partner could have done better for Mertesacker’s goal but was solid throughout the rest of the game.

Fermenia 6

Had a serious job on his hands as Welbeck and Kolasinic threatened down his flank and almost cost his team by losing the ball in a dangerous area. A tough day at the office but he did well overall.

Cleverley 8

We’ll give him the 8 for the dramatic late winner but apart from that he was his effective if rather boring self.

Doucoure 7

Worked tirelessly from start to finish, he put out fires all over the park and managed to get in on  the attacks some times as well.

Holebas 6.5

Made one vital block on Danny Welbeck but otherwise failed to impose himself on the game.

Pereyra 6

Missed a great chance to open the scoring but fluffed his header and otherwise was fairly anonymous.

Richarlison 8

Always a danger, he had a few chances and worked Arsenal’s back four to the bone, won the penalty and many new fans.

Gray 5

A torrid day for the striker who couldn’t seem to get in to the game. Biggest contribution was to come off for Deeney.

Substitutes:

Capoue 6

Was almost the hero when his late shot was deflected on to the post. Made a difference.

Deeney 8.5 (Man Of The Match)

The big man probably should have started. Scored his penalty and was a thorn in the side of the Arsenal back line from the moment he was introduced. Game changer.

Carrillo 6

Helped pin Arsenal back as the home side pressed for a winner, almost bagged it himself with a drive from outside the box.

Arsenal

Cech 6

Not particularly at fault for either goal but you can’t go conceding two goals and expect to get a 7 unless you’ve stopped it from being a rout. He didn’t.

Koscielny 7

Not bad from the centre back, generally solid and looked to bring the ball forward but had his hands full with Deeney.

Mertesacker 8

The one Arsenal player who can really leave the field with his head held high. Scored a great header and was solid at the back when most of those around him looked lost.

Monreal 5.5

Poor going forward, poor at the back, he couldn’t deal with Richarlison.

Bellerin 7

Looked a real threat going forward and put some decent crosses in. Unlucky to give away the penalty that allowed Watford back in to the game.

Elneny 6

Worked hard throughout but ultimately lacked the quality in almost all departments to positively influence the game

Xhaka 6.5

Set up the goal with a decent delivery from a corner but otherwise was very sloppy in possession.

Kolasinac 7

Put himself about as you would expect and helped out Welbeck in attack but not a great day for the Arsenal fan favourite.

Iwobi 7.5

A good display from the youngster who really seems to be improving with each performance. Offered energy, strength and dynamism to a side so often lacking in these departments.

Welbeck 7

Classic Welbeck. Hard work, lots of running, great hold up play. Might have had a penalty but no goals for the England man.

Lacazette 6

Showed some nice touches but failed to register a single shot in the game. Not good enough for a player of his ability.

Substitutes:

Holding 5.5

Made a few clearances when he came on.

Ozil 5

Could have been the hero but wasn’t. Missed a great opportunity to win it. Not much going right for the German at the minute.

Giroud 5

Very poor, offered nothing when he came on.
