We all love goals, and when it comes to goals there is little more pleasing on the eye then a well struck volley hitting the back of the onion bag. In the latest instalment of our ” 5 Of The Best ,” series we take a trip down memory lane taking in 5 of the Premier Leagues Best Volleys Ever.

Alan Shearer v Everton 2002

We’ll get started with a stunning volley from the Premier Leagues greatest ever goalscorer. Super Al banged in 260 goals in his Premier League career, but this without a doubt this strike was the cream of the crop.

Laurent Robert played a long ball up to target man Shola Ameobi, who headed the ball into Shearers path 35 yards a from goal. Newcastle’s number 9 then smashed a thunderous dipping volley past Everton keeper Richard Wright, who luckily for his own safety got nowhere near the ball. A sweeter volley of a football you will not see.

Thierry Henry v Man United 2000

If Shearers strike was all about power and precision, Arsenal legend Theirry Henrys wonder goal against Man United was all imprevisation and technique.

There seemed to be little danger as the ball was rolled into the Frenchman on the edge of United’s box with his back to goal. Uniteds full back Denis Irwin was touch tight, but what Henry did next would leave Uniteds players in shock and Arsenal fans bouncing around in ecstasy.

In one magical fluid movement, Henry flicked the ball up, turned and hit a beautiful weighted arching lob over the head of French International teammate Fabian Barthez. A breathtaking finish by one of the Premier Leagues best ever players.

Tony Yeboah v Liverpool 1995

Ghanaian hitman Tony Yeboah made himself a cult hero with Leeds fans in the mid 90’s with goals like this screamer. In fact, chances are if you grew up in the 90’s you spent a large part of your youth screaming ” Yeboaaaaah ” every time you or one of your mates smashed in a volley.

A routine high ball was played up to the edge of the Liverpool box, Rod Wallace headed the ball back into the path of Yeboah, who unleashed a thunderous right footed volley past David James and in off the cross bar. Yep, it’s true what they say, they always look better when they go in off the bar !

Wayne Rooney v Man City 2011

Unless you’ve been living on the moon the last few years you will have seen this goal replayed hundreds of times on Sky Sports. Having said that, there’s no getting away from the fact it that it’s one of the best ever Premier League goals and the best of Rooneys 253 strikes for the Red Devil’s.

Nani’s deflected cross from the right seemed to be too far behind Rooney, who had found some space between City defenders, 12 yard from goal, but Rooney had other ideas and smashed a spectacular bicycle kick straight into the top corner. A goal straight out of the top drawer, which spurred United on to win the League that year.

Paolo Di Canio v Wimbledon 2000

We’ve saved the best for last, well in this authors opinion anyway. Enigmatic Italian Di Canio was a joy to watch at his finest and really was your stereotypical flair player, half mad man, half footballing genius.

Trevor Sinclair sent a drilled cross field pass in the direction of Di Canio, who had picked up a position in the Dons box, but way out to the left. Most players would never have even thought of attempting what he did next, let alone execute it.

Di Canio leapt 4-5 yards of the ground and hit a scissor kicked volley with the outside of his right boot flying across goal and into the right hand corner of the net. A simply stunning finish that required unbelievable levels of technical proficiency and huge amounts of audacity. Take a bow son, take a bow !
