Spurs v Chelsea

Spurs go into this game in fine form, having won their last 9 games in a row in all competitions, scoring 28 goals in the process. It’s good news all over the park for Mauricio Pochettino. The defence looks rock solid under the leadership of the superb Toby Alderwerald. Moussa Dembele continues to excel alongside Victor Wanayama in centre of midfield and their attacking quartet of Alli, Eriksen, Son and Kane are all banging in the goals for fun.

Spurs will also be buoyed by the re-ignition of this year’s title race, as they cut the gap to Chelsea to 4 points last weekend. Let’s be honest, unless you remember the 60’s, this is probably the strongest Spurs side most football fans have ever seen and with the added subplot of the potential psychological damage a victory could inflict on Chelsea, heading into the Premier League run in, this really is set up to be a classic.

Spurs were unlucky at Stamford bridge earlier in the season and they played Chelsea off the park at White Hart Lane at the turn of the year so Mauricio Pochettino’s men have no reason to fear Chelsea.

The only real downside for Spurs is that the game is at Wembley, a ground at which they performed so badly during this year’s Champions League and Europa League campaigns.

Chelsea were convincingly beaten at Old Trafford last Sunday and it was the manner of their performance in that defeat and not necessarily the result of the game that will have concerned Antonio Conte.

This is still a formidable Chelsea side however and they are deservedly top of the League. Their run of form in which they won 13 Premier League games in a row was one of the most impressive runs in recent memory. Their coach deserves massive credit for finding a system that utilises the strengths of his players best, instead of complaining about needing more transfer windows, as a lot of other managers do.

After losing 2 of their last 3 in the League, there is however an argument that slight chinks are starting to appear in Chelsea’s previously impenetrable armour.  Their defence is not looking as solid as it did a few months ago, with the Blues having not having kept a clean sheet since Jan 22nd. Diego Costa’s form has dipped massively since that rumoured move to China in January which is also a concern.

Having said that, Chelsea will have massive motivation going into this game. Win and they will look nailed on for a League and Cup Double. Which will be a great achievement considering they finished 10th last season and very few of us had them down as genuine title contenders last summer.

Both teams go into this game with pretty much full strength squads, which should make for a fantastic spectacle. I think this will be a tight affair between, what are the 2 best teams in England and it really should be a fascinating watch, especially with the added phycological ramifications in terms of the title race. I’m putting my money on a draw after 90 minutes. With a predicted scoreline of 2-2.

At a push I would say if the game goes to extra time Chelsea’s superior big game experience in comparison to a relatively inexperienced Spurs side may just win out.

A penalty at 11/4 is always a decent shout in big games like this as well. I’ll be backing this in both FA Cup Semis and expect to come out with a tidy profit. This bet always makes watching the match that extra bit more interesting as you’ll spend the whole game screaming for a penalty every time the ball goes near the box!!! Note, all bets apply to 90 minutes only.

    • Draw 12/5
    • Score 2-2 , 14/1
    • Penalty in game 11/4
