David De Gea has been linked with a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid for years. The move could have gone through two years ago were it not for a dodgy fax machine but since then speculation has quietened down. Now though, according to a report on Spanish sports site Don Balon, Jose Mourinho might be willing let the star stopper leave.

The report suggests that Mourinho would only be open to the deal if Madrid would allow one their star players move in the other direction. “Ooh Gareth Bale”, I hear you thinking. Nope. “Ronaldo then, a final swan-song at the club he really loves..”. No, sorry, It’s Raphael Varane.

It’s clear that the Portuguese coach believes his side’s defence needs work. New signing Victor Lindeloft has failed to impress since his €35 million move from Benfica and Phil Jones’ fitness is always going to be an issue but one would have question if losing a ‘keeper who is probably responsible for 10-12 points a season is really the best way to shore things up at the back.

De Gea has been named in the Premier League team of the year on four occasions, including the last three years in a row and with 83 clean sheets in 211 league appearances has to be considered one of, if not the best in the world in his position.

Varane is a three time Champions League winner and is of course no slouch but even so Manchester United would want a significant sum as well as the player were the move to go through.

United for their part are apparently interested in Benfica’s young ‘keeper Mile Svilar as a replacement for De Gea. The 18 year old Belgian has impressed for the Portuguese side despite two errors that cost his side when the two teams met in  this year’s Champions League.
