Premier League Transfers (So Far) Part 2

Things are close at both the top and bottom the league, shrewd business in the January transfer window could swing things in a club’s favour. But what have your club done so far? Here’s part two of our mid-window round-up.

Manchester Utd

All quiet at Manchester United at the moment. José has ruled out a move for a centre back during the window and despite consistent rumours that the club will make a move from French wizard Antoine Griezmann it’s unlikely that there will be any transfer there until until the summer. Going out, 23 year old goalkeeper Sam Johnstone joins up with Villa, while 20 year old left back Joe Riley will join Sheffield United. Both loan deals that will last until the end of the season. Memphis Depay meanwhile looks to be leaving on a permanent deal to Nice or Lyon, though this has not gone through just yet.

Middlesbrough

Boro have been quite busy so far. Aitor Karanka’s first signing was Rudy Gestede from Villa for an undisclosed fee. The Benin striker has signed a deal that will see him at the Riverside until 2020. The teams desire for goals was underlined by their second signing. Mikael Soisalo joined from Finnish side Ilves Tampere. In scoring 7 and making 6 last term he was voted in the Finnish top division’s team of the year and is viewed as one of the country’s top talents.

Belgian midfielder Julien de Sart and Spanish goalie Tomas Mejias go out on loan to Derby and Rayo Vallecano respectively. David Nugent will join de Sart at Derby but on a permanent deal.

Southampton

Southampton are yet to make any signings in this window though they have been linked with Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini who would cost the Saints somewhere in the region of £20m. They could definitely do with bringing in a proven goalscorer after Charlie Austins injury. In the out tray, 22 year old midfielder Dominic Gape has joined League Two’s Wycombe Wanderers on a two and a half year deal.

Stoke City

No major arrivals so far but Potters fans will be delighted that the club have made goalkeeper Lee Grant’s loan move from Derby permanent. The 33 year old had been on loan since the summer but  six clean sheets in fifteen games was more than enough to convince Mark Hughes of his quality. One ‘keeper in, another out then as Jakob Haugaard has left to go to Wigan for the remainder of the season.

Sunderland

Nothing happening at Sunderland at the moment. Not too surprising given their financial woes and terrible history in the transfer market. A result for the Black Cats would be to hold on to in-form striker Jermaine Defoe.

Swansea City

The Swans need to do something if they are to save their season. Bob Bradley has moaned that he didn’t get the chance to make any signings but new man Paul Clement hasn’t wasted any time. Luciano Narsingh has joined from PSV and the versatile winger should add a lot to the team going forward. His fellow Dutchman Marvin Emnes has been recalled from his loan at Blackburn to give Clement further options in attack. At the back he has strengthened by adding Martin Olson who joins from Norwich on a two and a half year deal while midfielder Tom Carroll returns to the Liberty Stadium from Spurs. The 24 year old impressed during a loan spell at Swansea in the 14/15 season and he and Swansea will be hoping this move works out as well as a certain other midfielder who yoyo’d between the two sides.

Tottenham Hotspur

All “outs” at Spurs for the moment with the aforementioned Tom Carroll going to Swansea while 19 year old striker Ryan Loft has gone on loan to Stevenage until the end of the season.

Watford

Relatively quiet at Vicarage Road so far this window. Tom Cleverly has joined on loan from Everton and the former United player will be hoping to kick start blah blah blah, he’s just going to pass the ball sideways and backwards a lot isn’t he? Until Troy Deeney murders him. Going out, Adalberto Peñaranda has joined Malaga on a six month loan.

West Bromwich Albion

No-one coming in for the Baggies yet but plenty making their way out on loan. 25 year old winger Callum McManaman is heading to Sheffield Wednesday, Graig Gardner goes to Birmingham in a move that will be made permanent in the summer, and finally striker duo Tyler Roberts and Andre Wright will join up with League One’s Shrewsbury Town and League Two’s Yeovil Town respectively until the end of the season.

West Ham Utd

Last but not least West Ham. The Hammers have had a bid for Sunderland’s Jermaine Defoe turned down but he’s too good for them really. Expect them to sign some disastrous striker before the window closes but so far all their moves have been outgoing. Martin Samuelson (Peterborough), Sam Howes (Hampton and Richmond Borough) and Alex Pike (Cheltenham Town) have all gone out on loan. Lewis Page, who had been on loan at Coventry has signed for Charlton on a permanent basis while hot footed striker Simone Zaza was recalled from his loan from Juve only to immediately go out again to Valencia.
