Spurs marked their last game at White Hart Lane with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United today, and in the process confirmed their highest league finish in 54 years.

The home side got off to a perfect start after just 6 minutes, when Victor Wanayama lost Wayne Rooney from a short corner to power home Ben Davis’ excellent cross.

Martial almost pulled United level on 17 minutes but his curling effort from the edge of the box went just wide of the post. A minute later Son should have done better when one on one with De Gea but the best the South Korean could do was to shoot straight at the United keeper.

Spurs were dominating the game and almost increased their lead on 20 minutes when Kane headed Eriksen’s beautifully whipped cross against the bar. Spurs were creating havoc in the United box with crosses, which was surprising considering all four of United’s backline where centre backs.

Maurico Pochettino’s men continued to push United back with their high intensity style of play, but it would be United who almost scored just before the break when Bailly found himself through on goal, the Ivorian perhaps surprised to find himself in such a position attempted to square to Mata instead of shooting himself and the chance was lost.

The second period started in exactly the same way as the first, with Spurs scoring an early goal from a set piece. This time it was a free kick from the right, Eriksen who was superb throughout, whipped the ball in with bags of pace and Mr.Tottenham Harry Kane was on hand to place a fantastic flicked finish with the outside of his boot, past a hapless De Gea.

Kane then went close to making it 3-0 for the home side with a left footed effort from the edge of the area and it looked as if things could get embarrassing for United. Mourinho responded by replacing Tuanzebe and Lingard with Herrera and Mkhitaryan. The changes seemed to give United a bit more of a foothold in the game and in the 71st minute they pulled one back. Martial who had looked dangerous all day skipped past Trippier on the left and ran towards Spurs six yard box before pulling the ball back to Rooney who finished past Lloris.

Marcus Rashford was soon introduced as United began to sense they may be able to get something out of the game. As United committed more men forward in search of the equaliser Spurs looked dangerous on the break with Alli and N’Koudou both having goal bound efforts cleared off the line by Phil Jones.

United almost equalised right at the end but Rashford could not keep his effort down after a ball over the top by Carrick. Spurs deservedly saw the game out, much to the joy of their fans, on what was a historic day for everybody associated with the club.
