Newcastle – Championship Champions 2016/2017

One our of resident writers and massive Newcastle fan Ben, gives us his take on a dramatic Championship Sunday.

Today Newcastle won the Championship, one point ahead of Brighton. In a manic final day, Newcastle claimed the title right at the very end.

Ayoze Perez opened the scoring, when he netted a lovely flicked goal after a well worked team move. Atsu almost doubled the score but his powerful shot was pushed away by the keeper. Newcastle were still hunting for another goal and almost scored one after a scramble in the box.

Atsu looked dangerous and almost scored again. Mbemba put the Magpies 2 up on the hour mark when he tapped it into an empty net after a rebounded shot. Shelvey almost added another but his shot rolled agonisingly past the post. Gayle then completed the rout in the final minute when Mitrovic knocked down a long ball for the Englishman to slip past the keeper.

Newcastle had done all they could possibly do but Brighton were beating Aston Villa by one goal to nil. As it stood Brighton were winning the league. Everything was looking bleak for Newcastle. But football doesn’t follow scripts. A 90th minute Jack Grealish strike levelled the scores and handed the title to Newcastle. A sickening mistake from keeper Stockdale dashed Brighton’s title hopes. This sent Newcastle into absolute raptures. Scenes.

A long, hard slog of a season was finally over and finished in the best possible way. 3 games ago Newcastle were 7 points behind Brighton, now they’ve pipped them to the title by one point. Truly magical stuff. All the money spent, all the heart-breaking losses, all the lessons learnt, they were all worth it. Onwards and upwards to the Premier League.
